 100 Years of Railways

100 Years of Railways

$5.3

A visual history of Great Britain’s railway network. Contains around 300 photographs from PA Photos’ huge archives, spanning the whole of the 20th Century. The railway system in Britain is the oldest in the world, beginning in 1825 with the first locomotive hauled public railway, and culminating in a network of more than 10,000 miles of track by 2000 and a high-speed rail link to continental Europe via the Channel Tunnel. This book traces rail transport from the cramped carriages hauled by dirty steam locomotives to streamlined air-conditioned trains. It charts the growth of private local lines, their amalgamation, the introduction of diesel and electric rolling stock, competition from road transport and the closure of branch lines and freight depots in the 1960s, through nationalization, privatization and the remedial work to restore the railways as efficient, cost effective transport for the 21st century.

Excerpt: Guiyang – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The city was first constructed as early as 1283 AD during the Yuan Dynasty. It was originally called Shunyuan (), meaning obeying the Yuan (the Mongol rulers). Originally the area was populated by non-Chinese. The Sui dynasty (AD 581618) had a commandery there, and the Tang dynasty (618907) a prefecture. They were, however, no more than military outposts, and it was not until the Yuan (Mongol) invasion of southwest China in 1279 that the area was made the seat of an army and a “pacification office.” Chinese settlement in the area also began at that time, and, under the Ming (13681644) and Qing (16441911) dynasties, the town became the seat of a superior prefecture named Guiyang. Locally Guiyang was an important administrative and commercial center with two distinct merchant communities, consisting of the Sichuanese, who lived in the “new” northern part of the city, and those from Hunan, Guangdong, and Guangxi province, who lived in the “old” southern part. Nevertheless, until the Sino-Japanese War (193745), Guiyang was no more than the capital of one of China’s least-developed provinces. As elsewhere in the southwest, considerable economic progress was made under the special circumstances of wartime. Road transport infrastructure with Kunming in Yunnan province and with Chongqing in Sichuan (China’s wartime provisional capital) and into Hunan were established. Work was begun on a railway from Liuzhou in Guangxi, and after 1949 this development was accelerated. Guiyang has subsequently become a major provincial city and industrial base. In 1959 the rail network in Guangxi was completed, allowing seamless connection from Guizhou to Chongqing to the north, to Kunming to the west, and Changsha to the eas… More:

Its official name on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is “Cogan House Covered Bridge”. It is the only covered bridge ever built in Cogan House Township and the name comes from the township, as well as the village of Cogan House, which is northeast of the bridge. Cogan House Township and the village are named for David Cogan, who settled on Larrys Creek in 1825. Cogan was the one of the few settlers in the area for many years and grew tired of living nearly alone in the wilderness. In 1842 he abandoned his homestead, as did a neighbor named Carter. Their houses were used by hunters and travelers and the name Cogan’s House was given to the area. Cogan House Township was formed from parts of Jackson and Mifflin Townships on December 6, 1843. Since the bridge’s 1998 restoration, the Lycoming County Commissioners have officially called it the “Buckhor… More:

400 Story: Chicago and North Western's Premier Passenger Trains

400 Story: Chicago and North Western’s Premier Passenger Trains

$29.95

Three midwestern railroads introduced luxury passenger service in 1935, competing for Chicago-Twin Cities business and leisure travelers. Chicago and North Western’s modern, sleek, and fast rail line began with a conventional steam-powered train dubbed the “400” and named after its ambitious schedule: “400 miles in 400 minutes.” In 1939, it evolved into an even faster diesel-powered streamlined train, eventually expanding into a fleet of streamliners that served Wisconsin, Minnesota, and upper Michigan. The 400 Story captures the excitement of this era, tracing the rise and fall of the premier passenger system that made “Twin Cities 400” a household term in the upper Midwest. Jim Scribbins had a lifetime career at Milwaukee Road and is the author of The Hiawatha Story(Minnesota, 2006) and four other books about upper midwestern railroads. He lives in West Bend, Wisconsin.

Alco Locomotives

From 1901 to 1969, Alco locomotives were among the best known in North America. Here is the first comprehensive history of American Locomotive Company’s steam- and diesel-powered offerings—machines that combined a rich railroading heritage with a reputation for pushing the envelope of locomotive technology.Beginning with the steam era, veteran rail author Brian Solomon covers the design and development of standard Alco stalwarts—including Mikados, Atlantics, and Mallets—as well as more powerful and flashy postwar models—most notably New York Central’s Hudsons, Union Pacific’s Challengers and Big Boys, and Milwaukee Road’s Atlantics and Hudsons. Diesel coverage features all pre- and postwar models, including Alco’s pioneering road switchers, its FA/FB freight units, and the classic PA passenger locomotive. A mix of high-quality historical photos, modern color images, and primary research ensure a fitting tribute to this icon of the American rails. While vying with behemoth EMD for a piece of the domestic diesel business, Alco lost market share and exited the industry in 1969, but not before leaving its mark with some of the most beloved and interesting locomotives in the history of North American rails. Throughout this tribute, readers witness a company continually meeting the demands of an ever-changing industry and economy.

BOSTON. Saturday, March 3.—We met at breakfast at half-past eight, and made the acquaintance of buckwheat cakes and molasses. Then to the monument on Bunker’s Hill. We took a wrong bridge, and got to the Cambridge side, but easily found a road and bridge leading to Charleston, where Bunker’s Hill is. This part of the town is quite intersected by railways. These cross the streets in all directions on the level, and are in most cases without any protection. A sign-board, stretched full in front across the whole breadth of the street, bears the legend, ” Railway crossing.—Look out for the engine while the bell is ringing ;” and, in addition to this, a gate is, in some instances, shut across the street while a train is passing. The onus of responsibility seems to be thrown as much as possible on the unlucky passenger. Should he get smashed after the above-mentioned admonition, he is supposed to be himself to blame. The American engine and car are both very different from ours. The locomotives are much larger, and have three striking peculiarities. The chimney or smoke- stalk is in the shape of a great inverted cone, the object of the broad top being to hold an arrangement for preventing pieces of burning wood blowing out. This BOSTON. 11 huge chimney is balanced by a house at the opposite end for the drivers. Without such a protection they could not stand either the summer heat or the winter cold of this climate. The third peculiarity is in the arrangement of the wheels. Thedriving wheels, varying in number from two to four pairs, are placed together behind, while in front two pairs of small wheels support a swivel platform beneath the engine,—an arrangement introduced to give facility in turning. The carriages, or cars, as they are called, are

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture designed by Antony Gormley, which is located in Gateshead, England. As the name suggests, it is a steel sculpture of a graceful angel, standing 20m tall, with wings measuring 54m across. The wings themselves are not planar, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward, which Gormley has said aims to create “a sense of embrace”. It stands on a hill, on the southern edge of Low Fell overlooking the A1 road and the A167 road into Tyneside and the East Coast Main Line rail route, and just south of the site of Team Colliery.

Automated Transport Systems for Sustainable Urban Mobility

Automated Transport Systems for Sustainable Urban Mobility

$183.75

This book presents a study of the potentials of automated urban transport systems (AUTS) to provide more sustainable mobility in urban areas. AUTS consist of a fleet of vehicles with fully automated driving capabilities for passenger transport on a rail or road network with on-demand and door-to-door capability. Various related systems have proven to be feasible and to provide some of the benefits anticipated. Users and stakeholders were able to envisage the potential of AUTS to improve urban mobility, but some concerns remained over use of the systems in mixed traffic. After having used the system, public acceptance increased. AUTS vehicle performance parameters including acceleration, deceleration, and jerk are below benchmark values for comparable systems in terms of comfort and safety levels for passengers. The study has shown that there is large potential for AUTS, but a number of implementation barriers so far have hindered a more wide-spread and large-scale implementation.

On April 6th, the German 2nd and 12th Armies, Italian 2nd and 9th Armies, and the Hungarian 4th, 5th and Mobile Corps invaded Yugoslavia from Italy, Germany, Romania, Bulgaria and Albania. Few of the Royal Yugoslav Army’s 30 divisions actively resisted, and after 11 days the Yugoslav High Command surrendered. In Croatia, a puppet state was installed. Axis forces quickly occupied the principal towns and patrolled the main road and rail links, but in the villages, countryside and mountains, a vicious and complex guerrilla war was brewing. This title takes a close look at the German, Italian, Croatian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Slovenian units that fought for the Axis powers in Yugoslavia during World War II.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), formerly also briefly known as CP Rail (reporting mark CP) between 1968 and 1996, is a historic Canadian Class I railway founded in 1881 and now operated by Canadian Pacific Railway Limited which began operations as legal owner in a corporate restructuring in 2001. Its rail network stretches from Vancouver to Montreal, and also serves major cities in the United States such as Minneapolis, Chicago, and New York City. Its headquarters is in Calgary, Alberta. It owns approximately 14,000 route miles of track all across Canada and into the United States, stretching from Montreal to Vancouver, as far north as Edmonton. The company acquired two American lines in 2009: the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad and the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad. The trackage of the ICE was at one time a part of CP subsidiary Soo Line and predecessor line The Milwaukee Road. The combined DME/ICE system spanned North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Iowa, as well as two short stretches into two other states which included a line to Kansas City, Missouri and a line to Chicago, Illinois, and regulatory approval to build a line into the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The railway was originally built between eastern Canada and British Columbia between 1881 and 1885 (connecting with Ottawa Valley and Georgian Bay area lines built earlier), fulfilling a promise extended to British Columbia when it entered Confederation in 1871. It was Canada’s first

Bajz Rail Station

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Bajzë Rail Station is a railroad station located in Bajzë, Albania. It serves Albanian Railways as a freight line between Bajzë and Shkodër with an extension to the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica operated by Railways of Montenegro. Two freight trains pass daily through the station, hauling over 10,000 tonnes of commodities monthly. Long term plans exist to establish and operate international passenger trains between Albania and Montenegro via Bajzë. The vast majority of Albanian entrepreneurs import their goods through the railway line from all over Europe, as transport through train is about 50% cheaper than road transport. Cleaning of toxic chemicals, which had been dumped during 1991-1992, finished in 2009. The UNDP is currently in charge of a 2.2 million USD programme aimed at clearing the toxic waste, with funding from the Albanian and Dutch governments.

Excerpt: Coney Island Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1919, a completely reconstructed New West End Terminal was built on an elevated structure to consolidate the terminals of all the former steam railroad lines terminating at Coney Island except the Long Island Rail Road-controlled New York and Manhattan Beach Railway. “West End” was gradually dropped from the terminal’s name, and it is now known as Stillwell Avenue Terminal or Coney Island Terminal. Station signage reads Stillwell Avenue Coney Island. Beginning in late 2001, Coney Island Terminal was entirely reconstructed, and the new terminal opened May 23, 2004 with 6 tracks. The project completed on May 29, 2005, with full restoration of N service and all 8 tracks in service. A new entrance building was constructed, with a terra cotta facade in imitation of the former terminal, including restored BMT signs and logos. The former steel and concrete station, badly corroded by the effects of salt water and poor maintenance, was replaced with a new infrastructure, including a soaring roof with arches reminiscent of classic European train sheds. The roof is glazed with photovoltaic (solar electric) panels, consisting of 2,800 thin-film modules from SCHOTT (Germany) and covering a surface of 76,000 square feet (7,100 m). The solar panel system has a nominal power of about 210 kWp, which generates an annual output of 250,000 kW hours, which the station can use to offset power needs. It is the largest renewable-energy enabled mass transit station in the United… More:

The area has excellent mining potential which cannot be exploited effectively without rail facilities. The route has been surveyed and the implications of compensating land owners are being worked out. Australian and American interests are examining the project and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) may help with finance. The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), another prospective source of funding, is also looking at the scheme. Excerpt: Cardiff Central bus station is the main bus transport interchange in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. With 34 stands, it is the largest bus station in the city and in Wales. It is located adjacent to Cardiff Central railway station forming a major bus-rail-cycle-taxi interchange. The station used to handle the vast majority of bus and coach services that run in and through the city. Notable exceptions to this are the Megabus service (which calls at Kingsway and Cardiff University), Stagecoach routes 122 (which calls at Greyfriars Road) and EST route 89 (which uses Customhouse Street). However most city service now circle the city centre without calling at the station The station is served by the Free b service, a free shuttle bus that circles the city centre every 10 minutes. Cartographies of Travel and Navigation

Cartographies of Travel and Navigation

Finding one’s way with a map is a relatively recent phenomenon. In premodern times, maps were used, if at all, mainly for planning journeys in advance, not for guiding travelers on the road. With the exception of navigational sea charts, the use of maps by travelers only became common in the modern era; indeed, in the last two hundred years, maps have become the most ubiquitous and familiar genre of modern cartography.Examining the historical relationship between travelers, navigation, and maps, Cartographies of Travel and Navigation considers the cartographic response to the new modalities of modern travel brought about by technological and institutional developments in the twentieth century. Highlighting the ways in which the travelers, operators, and planners of modern transportation systems value maps as both navigation tools and as representatives of a radical new mobility, this collection brings the cartography of travel—by road, sea, rail, and air—to the forefront, placing maps at the center of the history of travel and movement.Richly and colorfully illustrated, Cartographies of Travel and Navigation ably fills the void in historical literature on transportation mapping.
