Chapters: States and Territories Established in 1607, Virginia, Colony of Virginia, Popham Colony, British America, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn, Sayn-Wittgenstein-Wittgenstein. Excerpt: The Commonwealth of Virginia () is a U.S. state on the Atlantic Coast of the Southern United States. Virginia is nicknamed the “Old Dominion” and sometimes the “Mother of Presidents” because it is the birthplace of eight U.S. presidents. The geography and climate of the state are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which are home to much of its flora and fauna. The capital of the Commonwealth is Richmond; Virginia Beach is the most populous city and Fairfax County the most populous political subdivision. The state population is nearly eight million. The area’s history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Land from displaced Native American tribes and slave labor each played significant roles in the colony’s early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the Thirteen Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was the Confederate capital and the state of West Virginia separated. Although traditionally conservative and historically part of the South, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia. The state government, home to the oldest legislature in the Americas, has been repeatedly ranked most effective by the Pew Center on the States. It is unique in how it treats cities and counties equally, manages local roads, and prohibits its Governors from serving consecutive terms. Virginia’s economy h… More: |

Chapters: 1691 Treaties, States and Territories Established in 1691, Province of New Hampshire, Province of Massachusetts Bay, Treaty of Limerick. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Province of New Hampshire was a crown colony organized on October 7, 1691, during the period of British colonization of the Americas. The charter was enacted May 14, 1692, by William and Mary, the joint monarchs of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland, at the same time that the Province of Massachusetts Bay was created. Both were formerly parts of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Province of New Hampshire was located in the present-day U.S. state of New Hampshire, and was named after the county of Hampshire in southern England by John Mason. The province did not get its own colonial governor until 1741, when Benning Wentworth was appointed. Many of the subsequent New Hampshire Grants later became the state of Vermont. Prior to British colonization, the area which became the province was populated by bands of the Abenaki, who lived in sometimes large villages of longhouses. Depending on the season they would either remain near their villages to fish, gather plants, engage in sugaring, and trade or fight with their neighbors, or head to nearby fowling and hunting grounds; later they also farmed tobacco and the”three sisters”: corn, beans, and squash. Prior to 1691, the “New Hampshire Colony” was the product of several English land grants dating from 1623, when it was first founded by John Mason, to 1680. For much of its colonial history it was controlled by the Massachusetts Bay Colony based in Boston. In 1631 Captain Thomas Wiggin served as the first governor of the province of the Upper Plantation of New Hampshire, comprising modern-day Dover, Durham and Stratham… More: |

The Baltic was reported unfit for service in February 1863, with her deteriorating condition preventing her from joining the defense of Mobile Bay in June 1864. She was dismantled in July of 1864 and her armor transferred to CSS Nashville . The Baltic was captured at Nanna Hubba Bluff, Tombigbee River, Alabama, on May 10, 1865, and sold to the U.S. Government on December 31, 1865. An alliance of southern samurai, particularly the domains of Chsh and Satsuma, and court officials secured control of the imperial court and influenced the young Emperor Meiji . Tokugawa Yoshinobu , the sitting shogun, realizing the futility of his situation, abdicated political power to the emperor. Yoshinobu had hoped that by doing this, the Tokugawa house could be preserved and to participate in the future government. However, military movements by imperial forces, partisan violence in Edo , and an imperial decree promoted by Satsuma and Choshu abolishing the house of Tokugawa led Yoshinobu to launch a military campaign to seize the emperor’s court at Kyoto. The military tide rapidly turned in favor of the smaller but relatively modernized imperial faction, and after a series of battles culminating in the surrender of Edo, Yoshinobu personally surrendered. Those loyal to the Tokugawa retreated to northern Honsh and later to Hokkaid , where they founded the Ezo republic . Defeat at the Battle of Hakodate broke this |

THE BAY OF BISCAY. E crossed the Bay of Biscay from Usliant to Cape Finisterre, a distance of about 425 miles, in about two days, or forty- eight hours, with a strong cold westerly wind. This enormous basin extends inland to Bordeaux, a distance of 300 miles. Its southern boundary runs due east and west along the parallel of 43’30 with singular regularity. This inhospitable coast, backed by the mountains of Asturia, consists of a wall of silurian and crystalline rocks,—a continuation of the great Pyrenean formation, with carboniferous and Devonian measures, extensively worked in the well-known mining districts of Santander and Bilbao. Its northern boundary consists similarly of an irregular, deeply-indented coast, also composed of hard crystalline metamorphic rocks, and the formation of the Bay appears partly due to the actionThe Stormy Bay. 25 of th-e great Atlantic wave, confined between these indestructible walls, thus clearing away the tertiary measures which line the bottom of the Bay from Rocheforte to Bayonne. A continuous denudation of this character would ultimately absorb the whole district of the Garonne and form a new entrance into the Mediterranean, flanked by the Pyrenees. During westerly winds, which set directly into the Bay, no sailor after losing sight of the great lighthouse at Ushant is free from anxiety until he sights the flashing beacon off Cape Finis- terre, for there is little chance of escape for a crippled vessel driven into this stormy cul-de-sac during a continuous westerly gale. The Bay owes its dangerous character not only to its land-locked, inhospitable coast, but also to the strong and shifting tidal currents which set around the Northern Cape, and to the fact that the great Atlantic waves assume unusual dimensions a |

Amphibians and Reptiles of Delmarva $277.48 Because of its geographic position and its geologic past, the Delmarva Peninsula is a transition zone between the northern and southern sections of the Atlantic Coast of North America. The north-south influences result in a high diversity of species of plants and animals, including amphibians and reptiles, for the small size of the peninsula. Delmarva’s amphibians and reptiles are overlooked by the vast majority of people living in the area. Many have never heard a northern spring peeper call or seen a salamander, even though a breeding chorus of peepers is common in the spring, and salamanders are residents of most woodlands in Delmarva.Misconceptions also abound. For example, people sometimes think they have seen cottonmouths (water moccasins) on Delmarva, even though this venomous species is not known to occur north of the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Other common fallacies are the belief that snakes are slimy or that handling a toad can give you warts. This first field guide to amphibians and reptiles of Delmarva will be useful to a wide variety of people interested in these fascinating creatures — from the curious child who brings home a salamander to students, experienced naturalists, and professionals in need of life history, behavioral, and distributional information on Delmarva’s amphibians (salamanders and frogs) and reptiles (turtles, lizards, and snakes). Seventy-three species are included — seventy known to occur on Delmarva and three that the authors believe either occur there or once did. Outstanding color plates aid in identifying the species. |

BAKER & TAYLOR BOOKS Lonely Planet Brazil – 9781741791631 $16.99 This South American tourist destination is known for its beaches, early Spanish Catholic artifacts, and the vast Amazon lands that continue to deliver new discoveries. Of the Americas, Brazil is thought to have been populated for thousands of years, with rich cultural history. Viva! The Native American peoples who were the original inhabitants of what is now Brazil included the Arawak and Carib groups in the north, the Tup -Guaran of the east coast and the Amazon River valley, the Ge of eastern and southern Brazil, and the Pano in the west. For the most part these groups were essentially seminomadic peoples, who subsisted by hunting and gathering and simple agriculture. Those groups in the more remote areas of the interior maintained their traditional way of life until the late 20th century, when their existence was threatened by the advancing frontier. The Spanish navigator Vicente Y ez Pinz n was the first known European in the region now constituting Brazil. Landing near the site of present-day Recife on January 26, 1500, he subsequently drifted northward as far as the mouth of the Orinoco River. The newly found territory fell within the region assigned to Portugal by the terms of the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494), a Spanish-Portuguese agreement that modified the Line of Demarcation promulgated in 1493 by Pope Alexander VI. Probably for this reason, Spain made no territorial claims on the basis of Pinz n’s discovery. In April 1500, the Portuguese navigator Pedro lvares Cabral also reached the coast of present-day Brazil and formally claimed the surrounding region in the name of Portugal. The territory was named Terra da Vera Cruz (Portuguese for Land of the True Cross). An expedition under the command of the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci was sent to Terra da Vera Cruz by the Portuguese government in 1501. In the course of his explorations Vespucci named many capes and bays, including a bay which he called Rio de Janeiro. He returned to Portugal with a cargo |

Battle on the Bay: The Civil War Struggle for Galveston $13 The Civil War history of Galveston is one of the last untold stories from America’s bloodiest war, despite the fact that Galveston was a focal point of hostilities throughout the conflict. As other Southern ports fell to the Union, Galveston emerged as one of the Confederacy’s only lifelines to the outside world. When the war ended in 1865, Galveston was the only major port still in Confederate hands. In this beautifully written narrative history, Ed Cotham draws upon years of archival and on-site research, as well as rare historical photographs, drawings, and maps, to chronicle the Civil War years in Galveston. His story encompasses all the military engagements that took place in the city and on Galveston Bay, including the dramatic Battle of Galveston, in which Confederate forces retook the city on New Year’s Day, 1863.Cotham sets the events in Galveston within the overall conduct of the war, revealing how the city’s loss was a great strategic impediment to the North. Through his pages pass major figures of the era, as well as ordinary soldiers, sailors, and citizens of Galveston, whose courage in the face of privation and danger adds an inspiring dimension to the story. |

Chapters: Galveston Bay, Aransas Bay, Redfish Bay, Laguna Madre, Saint Charles Bay, Corpus Christi Bay, Copano Bay, Matagorda Bay, Espiritu Santo Bay, Trinity Bay, San Antonio Bay, Baffin Bay, Texas, East Matagorda Bay, Oso Bay, Nueces Bay, South Bay. Excerpt: Aransas Bay Aransas Bay is a bay on the Texas gulf coast. It is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by San José Island (also referred to as St. Joseph Island). Aransas Pass is the most direct navigable outlet into the Gulf of Mexico from the Bay. The cities of Aransas Pass and Port Aransas are located at the southern end, and Rockport is found on the central western shore. The bay is oriented laterally northeast-southwest, and connects to Redfish Bay in the southwest, Copano Bay to the west, Saint Charles Bay to the north, and Mesquite Bay to the northeast. There is a rich history of settlements on the bay, including ancient Native American settlements dating back millennia, 19th Century European immigrant towns including Lamar and Aransas, as well as the present day cities of Rockport, Fulton and Aransas Pass. Resources such as shrimp, fish, oysters and oil are found in the bay, and contribute to the local economy. History Humans first inhabited the area surrounding Aransas Bay approximately 6,000 to 8,000 years ago. The name itself derives from a group of people called the Aransas Indians, whose 4,000 year old campsites have been found near the bay. The nomadic Aransas, left the area circa 1200 to 1300 CE. According to archeologists, the Karankawas and Coahuiltecans arrived in 1400, but had mostly died out by the 1800s due to diseases from European colonists. Alonso Álvarez de Pineda of Spain is believed to be the first European to sail the bay, circa 1519. For over a century later, the Spanish had little |

Beaches of Jamaica: Negril $10.28 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Negril – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Football at sunset on Negril’s famed beach. The name “Negril” is a shortened version of “Negrillo,” as it was originally named by the Spanish in 1494. The name is thought to be a reference to the black cliffs south of the village. Although Negril has a long history, it did not become well known until the second half of the twentieth century. Negril’s development as a resort location began during the late 1950s, though access to the area proved difficult as ferries were required to drop off passengers in Negril Bay, forcing them to wade to shore. Most vacationers would rent rooms inside the homes of Jamaican families, or would pitch tents in their yards. The area’s welcoming and hospitable reputation grew over time and the first of many resorts were constructed in the mid to late 1960s. When the road between Montego Bay and Negril was improved in the early 1970s, it helped to increase Negril’s status as a new resort location. It was a two-lane paved road that ran approximately 100 yards (91 m) inland from two white coral sand beaches, at the southern end of which was a small village. The long paved road from the village ran north to Green Island, home to many of the Jamaican workers in Negril, and was straight enough to double as a runway for small airplanes, which was why there were lengths of railroad track standing on end along the side of the road – to discourage drug smugglers from landing on the road to pick up cheap cargos of marijuana. After Negril’s infrastructure was expanded — anticipating the growth of resorts and an expanding population, a small airport, the Negril Aerodrome, was built in 1976 near Rutland Point, alongside several small hotels mostly catering to the North American winter … More: |

Beyond Chinatown: The Metropolitan Water District, Growth, and the Environment in Southern California $24.95 As urban growth outstrips water supplies, how can the global challenge of providing “liquid gold” be met? Mixing history and policy analysis, Steven Erie tells the compelling story of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD)—one of the world’s largest and most important public water agencies—and its role in building the world’s 8th largest economy in a semi-desert. No tawdry tale of secret backroom conspiracies—as depicted in the famed film noir Chinatown—this fresh telling concerns an unheralded regional institution, its entrepreneurial public leadership, and pioneering policymaking. Using untapped primary sources, the author re-examines this great regional experiment from its obscure 1920s-era origins, through the Colorado River Aqueduct and State Water Projects, to today’s daunting mission of drought management, water quality, environmental stewardship, and post-9/11 supply security. A key focus is MWD’s navigation of recent epic water battles: San Diego’s combative quest for water independence from MWD and L.A.; lingering conflicts over the Colorado River and northern California’s fragile Bay-Delta ecosystem; and the myriad challenges posed by water markets, privatization, and water transfers.Facing unprecedented challenges, MWD is devising innovative formulas to sustain this improbable desert civilization. Beyond Chinatown concludes by considering MWD’s Integrated Resources Plan as a global model for water-resources planning and management, water supply diversification and reliability, affordability, and environmental sustainability. Chinatown’s seductive mythologies have obscured MWD’s authentic, instructive history and lessons.Praise for Steve Erie’s previous book, Globalizing L.A.:“This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the politics of Western cities, the politics of urban development, and especially the |

Black & Blue (rmst) $13.37 During an era of largely vacuous L.A. centred party rock, Portland, Oregon’s Black N’ Blue were a beacon in the dark. More heavily influenced by the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and European hard rock in general than their southern Californian cousins, their demos became hotly traded items in the early eighties, resulting in a world-wide deal with Geffen records and a debut album recorded in Germany with long time Scorpions / Accept associate Dieter Dierks producing. The album remains a classic and, along with the entire Geffen records output from the band, is issued here in Europe for the first time on CD. Remastered and with new sleeve notes, this is the alternative to paying $50.00 plus for those long deleted Japanese CD’s on E-bay! |

Black San Francisco: The Struggle for Racial Equality in the West,1900-1954 $2.72 By 1867 black San Franciscans had gained access to public transportation. In 1869 they were granted the right to vote by the state of California. In 1875 they fought for desegregated schools and won. Yet in 1957, Willie Mays was initially denied the opportunity to purchase a home in an exclusive San Francisco neighborhood because he was black. In Black San Francisco, Albert Broussard explores race relations in a city where whites, for the most part, were outwardly civil to blacks while denying them employment opportunities and political power. Understanding the texture of the racial caste system, he argues, is critical to understanding why blacks made so little progress in employment, housing, and politics despite the absence of segregation laws. When it came to racial equality in the early twentieth century, Broussard argues, the liberal progressive image of San Francisco was largely a facade. Illustrating how black San Franciscans struggled to achieve equality in the same manner as their counterparts in the Midwest and East, he challenges the rhetoric of progress and opportunity with evidence of the reality of inequality for black San Franciscans. Black San Francisco is considerably broader in scope than any previous study of African-Americans in the West. It provides extensive coverage of the city’s black community during the Great Depression and the New Deal, details civil rights activities from 1915 to 1954, and provides extensive biographical material on local black leaders. In his reconstruction of the plight of San Francisco’s black citizens, Broussard reveals a population that, despite its small size before 1940, did not accept second-class citizenship passively yet remained nonviolent into the 1960s. He also shows how World War II was a watershed for Black San Francisco, bringing thousands of southern migrants to the bay area to work in the war industries. These migrants, in tandem with native black residents, formed coalitions |

Borders of Maryland: Potomac River, Mason-dixon Line, Wedge, Pocomoke River, Transpeninsular Line $10.46 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Potomac River, Mason-dixon Line, Wedge, Pocomoke River, Transpeninsular Line. Excerpt: The original Mason-Dixon Line The Mason-Dixon Line (or Mason and Dixon’s Line ) was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the resolution of a border dispute between British colonies in Colonial America . It forms a demarcation line among four U.S. states , forming part of the borders of Pennsylvania , Maryland , Delaware , and West Virginia (then part of Virginia ). In popular usage, especially since the Missouri Compromise of 1820 (apparently the first official use of the term “Mason’s and Dixon’s Line”), the Mason-Dixon Line symbolizes a cultural boundary between the Northern United States and the Southern United States (Dixie ). Background Maryland’s charter granted the land north of the entire length of the Potomac River up to the 40th parallel. A problem arose when Charles II granted a charter for Pennsylvania. The grant defined Pennsylvania’s southern border as identical to Maryland’s northern border, the 40th parallel. But the terms of the grant clearly indicate that Charles II and William Penn assumed the 40th parallel would intersect the Twelve-Mile Circle around New Castle, Delaware when in fact it falls north of Philadelphia , the site of which Penn had already selected for his colony’s capital city. Negotiations ensued after the problem was discovered in 1681. A compromise proposed by Charles II in 1682, which might have resolved the issue, was undermined by Penn receiving the additional grant of the ‘Three Lower Counties’ along Delaware Bay , which later became the Delaware Colony , a satellite of Pennsylvania. These lands had been part of Maryland’s original grant. In 1732 the proprietary governor of Maryland, Charles Calvert, 5th Baron |

California State Route 125 $45 State Route 125 currently runs from State Route 905 in Otay Mesa near the U.S.-Mexico border to State Route 52 in Santee. The southern portion of Route 125 from Route 905 to Route 54 near Chula Vista is a toll road called the South Bay Expressway. It is California’s first road built as a public/private partnership[citation needed]. The toll road is being funded by the private company California Transportation Ventures, Inc. and the following public agencies: the United States Department of Transportation, Caltrans, San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), and the City of Chula Vista. The toll road’s name is quite unusual, as it is built to freeway standards and therefore should be labeled a freeway under both California and federal law. See freeway and expressway for more information on the difference between the two. Route 125 was originally planned to continue north through East Miramar to Poway to connect with State Route 56 and Select Arterial 680 but Poway successfully blocked that by insisting Caltrans upgrade State Route 67 instead, leaving the northern terminus at State Route 52. |

Catalina by Air, California (Images of Aviation Series) $12.95 For years, reaching the paradise destination of Santa Catalina Island, located miles out in the Pacific Ocean, was possible primarily by steamship. But as early as 1912, the first amphibious airplane landed in Avalon Bay, and the first air-passenger service was introduced in 1919. Seaplane service thrived on Catalina, and aircraft engine roars became a distinctive memory for many residents, along with the thrill of crossing the channel by plane and landing on the water. The “Airport in the Sky” opened in 1946, with United Airlines operating DC-3s, followed by other airlines operating land-based planes. Today helicopters carry passengers across the San Pedro Channel in less than 15 minutes. This unique photographic history covers public air transportation to and from Southern California’s iconic island, featuring memories and stories from residents, visitors, and airline employees. |

Central Railroad of New Jersey $66.11 The Central Railroad of New Jersey, commonly known as the Jersey Central Lines or CNJ, was a Class I railroad with origins in the 1830s, lasting until 1976 when it was absorbed into Conrail with the other bankrupt railroads of the Northeastern United States. Its main line ran from Jersey City west through New Jersey to Phillipsburg and across the Delaware River to Easton and Scranton in Pennsylvania. Branches stretched into southern New Jersey to Delaware Bay. The CNJ was acquired by the Philadelphia and Reading Railway in 1883. Though that was later canceled, the Reading continued to exert major influence over the CNJ, and used it for its New York City terminal. Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey includes the CNJ’s Communipaw Terminal. |
