10.5/Day of Destruction $14.98 Lock your doors and stand in a doorway as you prepare for action, excitement, and blinding terror in this exclusive DVD double feature! Featuring earthquakes that show no signs of slowing down, 10.5 and Category 6: Day of Destruction are two room-rattling thrillers you don’t want to miss!10.5: Seattle, Washington: dawn. An earthquake trembles with a 7.9 magnitude. It’s the biggest natural disaster to hit the West Coast in over a century. The aftershock hits Northern California, reaching 8.4, splitting the earth and swallowing a train as it cruises along the landscape. The chance of an aftershock being greater than the quake is virtually unprecedented. Dr. Samantha Hill (Kim Delaney), an expert on hidden fault lines, and the President of the United States (Beau Bridges) must race against time to save the lives of millions.Category 6 – Day of Destruction: Nature strikes out with unfathomable fury as the unimaginable becomes a terrifying reality. Three twisters descend upon Las Vegas leaving a neon wasteland in their wake. Hurricanes tear through the Gulf Coast without warning. Record-high temperatures scorch the northeast. One-hundred-mile-an-hour winds tear across the south. Lightning storms ignite the sky. Wildfires blaze out of control. For Amy Harkin, a budding Chicago anchorwoman looking for her big break, the fear of these weather anomalies is second only to the dread of the inevitable repercussions: rolling coast-to-coast blackouts and the dwindling sources needed to revive them. With the worse power breakdown on record looming, an overload could cripple the nation and leave the entire population in the dark, without communication and vulnerable to unthinkable dangers. |

100 Series Shinkansen $38 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 100 series is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type built between 1984 and 1991 for the Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen high-speed lines. The earliest units have now been withdrawn from service, and the series was retired from the Tokaido Shinkansen line in September 2003. They were introduced after the 200 series trains, but their numbering is such because in the days of JNR, Shinkansen types running east of Tokyo were given even numbers and those west of Tokyo odd numbers, hence they were given the next odd number in line after 0, 100. |

The book originated as the novelette “Ender’s Game”, published in the August 1977 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. Elaborating on characters and plot lines depicted in the novel, Card later wrote additional books to form the Ender’s Game series. Card released an updated version of Ender’s Game in 1991, changing some political facts to accurately reflect the times. Set in Earth’s future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind who have barely survived two conflicts with the Formics (an insectoid alien race also known as the “Buggers”). In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, an international fleet maintains a school to find and train future fleet commanders. The world’s most talented children, including the novel’s protagonist Ender Wiggin, are taken at a very young age to a training center known as the Battle School. There, teachers train them in the arts of war through increasingly difficult games including ones undertaken in zero gravity in the Battle Room where Ender’s tactical genius is revealed. Reception to the book was generally positive, though some |

209 series $44 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 209 series is a commuter EMU type used by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) on railway lines in the Tokyo area. The series was introduced in 1993 to replace the aging 103 series stock on the Keihin-Tohoku and Negishi lines. The concept of the 209 series was to create a low-cost, minimal lifespan train (approximately 15 years) that would be replaced rather than rebuilt when they became life-expired. The 209 series was the first of the “New series trains”, and served as the basis for the E501, E217, 701 and E127 series rolling stock, as well as the E231 series stock, which in turn became the blueprint for successive trains developed by JR East and other railway companies in Japan. |

500 Series Shinkansen $38 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 500 series is a Shinkansen high-speed train type operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR West) on the Tokaido Shinkansen and Sanyo Shinkansen lines in Japan. They were designed to be capable of 320 km/h (200 mph) although they currently operate at a maximum of 285 km/h (177 mph) in service. The running gear utilizes computer-controlled active suspension for a smoother, safer ride, and anti-yaw dampers are fitted between cars for improved stability. All sixteen cars in each train are powered, giving a maximum of 18.24 MW (24,460 hp). Each train costs an estimated 5 billion yen, and only nine were built. They have long, pointed nose cones much more like that of a supersonic plane than that of a conventional high-speed train. In 1990, Hitachi commissioned Neumeister Design of Germany to create an exterior and interior design for a new 350 km/h shinkansen. This became the basis for the development of the 500 series. |

A Bloody Business $6.31 As the U.S. Army shrinks, a private army steps into the breach. A Bloody Business offers an unprecedented look behind the scenes and into the ranks of this mercenary force (numbering as many as 15,000 today) who guard supply convoys, train foreign soldiers, provide security for foreign leaders and dignitaries–and whose workplaces are the most dangerous hot spots on the planet. With its insights into who these men are, what drives them, where they come from, how they prepare, and what they do, this book provides a uniquely close-up and complete picture of the private army behind America’s military muscle. The author interviewed security contractors and their families, high-ranking coalition officials, and was in Iraq, where he witnessed how private soldiers fought ambushes, trained Iraqi forces, escorted high-level officials in dangerous conditions, and saw the contractor side of the Iraq war. Includes action on the supply lines and front lines of this unique conflict, and the stories of the contractors who live it every day. |

It covers everything from bagpipes to whisky with a few mentions of our dear neighbours, the Sassenachs, thrown in. So whether you are Scottish, a tourist visiting Scotland, an illegal immigrant gutting fish on Shetland or have found this book abandoned on a Trans-Siberian train, you are sure to be inspired and amused by our wit and wisdom. Conan Doyle[1] A STUDY IN SCARLET.PART I.(_Being a reprint from the reminiscences of_ JOHN H. WATSON, M.D., _lateof the Army Medical Department._) [2]CHAPTER I. MR. SHERLOCK HOLMES.IN the year 1878 I took my degree of Doctor of Medicine of theUniversity of London, and proceeded to Netley to go through the courseprescribed for surgeons in the army. Having completed my studies there,I was duly attached to the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers as AssistantSurgeon. The regiment was stationed in India at the time, and beforeI could join it, the second Afghan war had broken out. On landing atBombay, I learned that my corps had advanced through the passes, andwas already deep in the enemy’s country. I followed, however, with manyother officers who were in the same situation as myself, and succeededin reaching Candahar in safety, where I found my regiment, and at onceentered upon my new duties. The campaign brought honours and promotion to many, but for me it hadnothing but misfortune and disaster. I was removed from my brigade andattached to the Berkshires, with whom I served at the fatal battle ofMaiwand. There I was struck on the shoulder by a Jezail bullet, whichshattered the bone and grazed the subclavian artery. I should havefallen into the hands of the murderous Ghazis had it not been for thedevotion and courage shown by Murray, my orderly, who threw me across apack-horse, and succeeded in bringing me safely to the British lines.Worn with pain, and weak from the prolonged hardships which I hadundergone, I was removed, with a great train of wounded sufferers, tothe base hospital at Peshawar. Across the Open Field: Essays Drawn from English Landscapes $55 “Twenty-eight years ago I went to England for a three-month visit and rest. What I found changed my life.”So begins this memoir by one of America’s best-known landscape architects, Laurie Olin. Raised in a frontier town in Alaska, trained in Seattle and New York, Olin found himself dissatisfied with his job as an urban architect and accepted an invitation to England to take a respite from work. What he found, in abundance, was the serendipity of a human environment built over time to respond to the land’s own character and to the people who lived and worked there. For Olin, the English countryside was a palimpsest of the most eloquent and moving sort, yet whose manifestation was of ordinary buildings meant to shelter their inhabitants and further their work. With evocative language and exquisite line drawings, the author takes us back to his introduction to the scenes of English country towns, their ancient universities, meandering waterways, and dramatic cloudscapes racing in from the Atlantic. He limns the geologic histories found within the rock, the near-forgotten histories of place-names, and the recent histories of train lines and auto routes. Comparing the growth of building in the English countryside, Olin draws some sobering conclusions about our modern lifestyle and its increasing separation from the landscape. As much a plea for saving the modern American landscape as it is a passionate exploration of what makes the English landscape so characteristically English, Across the Open Field is “an affectionate ramble through real places of lasting worth.” |

Newbern and Beaufort—Black and White. Shortly after our arrival in the harbor, the military authorities had provided a special train for us—that is to say, a train composed of a wheezy little locomotive andanoldmail agent’s car, with all the windows smashed out and half the seats gone. By this means we were enabled, an hour after our visit to Beaufort, to be whirling over the military railroad from the little collection of Government warehouses on the opposite side of the harbor, called Morehead City, to Newborn. The whole way led through the exhausted turpentine forests of North-eastern North Carolina, which the turpentine growers have for many years been abandoning for the more productive forests of upper South Carolina. Here and there were swamps which Yankee drainage would soon convert into splendid corn land; and it is possible that Yankee skill might make the exhausted pineries very profitable; but, for the present, this country is not likely to present such inducements as to attract a large Northern emigration. The poorer people seem to be quietly living in their old places. Where the paroled rebel soldiers have returned, they have sought their former homes, and evince a very decided disposition to stay there. Throughout this region there is, as we learned, comparatively little destitution. The ocean is a near and never-failing resource; and from Newbern and Beaufort (both ofwhich have been in our possession during the greater part of the war) supplies have gonethrough the lines by a sort of insensible and invisible perspiration, which it would be unkind, to the disinterested traders who follow in the wake of an army, to call smuggling. Passing the traces of the works thrown up at the point where Burnside had his fight, we entered the |

It was a lovely day. This was about the time of the great railway mania. The coach was full of railway engineers, surveyors, and speculators, and their talk was of new lines, cuttings, tunnels, and viaducts. This was the opening out of a new world to me, who had never seen a railway. I travelled by train from Birmingham to London, and my first night in a second- rate hotel near the station (for I had arrived late) I am never likely to forget. I suppose my wholesome flesh was a sort of godsend to starved inhabitants of that bed of a kind that I had never before even heard of. I had quitted my dear old home with regret, and that night I bitterly repented having left it. I was, I am sure, the first and the least worthy of all my race who had ever dwelt in London, and I longed, how I longed, to leave it. But I had come to London to make my fortune (that elusive phantom) like many another ambitious youth. I had brought with me a good constitution, a ” little Latin and less Greek” in my head, a little money in my pocket, a good conscience, full trust in Providence, and a determination to work. My good mother had died a year before I left home, and shortly after my dear old father gave up his farm and retired to another county.Only once after many years did I find the opportunity of revisiting the scenes of my childhood, and then all was changed, All, all, were gone, the old familiar faces. All my uncles and aunts were dead—my father alone survived. He was born a hundred and thirteen years ago, … |

I travelled by train from Birmingham to London, and my first night in a second- rate hotel near the station (for I had arrived late) I am never likely to forget. I suppose my wholesome flesh was a sort of godsend to starved inhabitants of that bed of a kind that I had never before even heard of. My good mother had died a year before I left home, and shortly after my dear old father gave up his farm and retired to another county.Only once after many years did I find the opportunity of revisiting the scenes of my childhood, and then all was changed, All, all, were gone, the old familiar faces. Alex Lloyd Albums: Good in the Face of a Stranger, Watching Angels Mend, Black the Sun, Distant Light, Alex Lloyd $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Good in the Face of a Stranger is the fifth studio album by Australian rock musician Alex Lloyd, released through Inertia on November 1, 2008. The album is Lloyd’s first to be released independently, which is said to have given him more freedom, taking away the pressures of labels and giving him the chance to create a sound more like his debut release, Black the Sun. The online order of the album through JB Hi-Fi came signed by Alex Lloyd, with three bonus postcards. The album spawned two singles. “Slow Train” was released as the album’s first single in 2008, with it being available for free from Lloyd’s official website. The song’s music video was animated with 7,000 hand drawn pictures. Similarly, “What We Started”, the second single released in 2009, was also made available for free as a limited-time download via the Nova 100 website. The album received positive reviews upon release, with a number of reviewers likening both the sound and quality of the LP to that of his debut album, Black the Sun; Faster Louder attributed the album’s similarities to his earlier work on his decision to relocate to England, claiming that the “change of scenery has enabled Lloyd to get into the same creative head space last seen on his debut album” resulting in “a pleasant pop record containing some of his best songs in years”. Alexandra Nowak of The Independent Weekly also took a positive view, stating that “Good in the Face of a Stranger ultimately provides beautiful melodic lines with a mix of refined and delicate vocals that presents a basic yet artistically original album”. However, not all reviews were unanimously positive, as Tsunami Mag gave an opposing point of view, noting that by “sticking to his original guns and playing it safe… More: |

All the Way to Berlin $31.19 In mid-1943 James Megellas, known as Maggie to his fellow paratroopers, joined the 82d Airborne Division, his new home for the duration. His first taste of combat was in the rugged mountains outside Naples. In October 1943, when most of the 82d departed Italy to prepare for the D-Day invasion of France, Lt. Gen. Mark Clark, the Fifth Army commander, requested that the division’s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Maggie’s outfit, stay behind for a daring new operation that would outflank the Nazis’ stubborn defensive lines and open the road to Rome. On 22 January 1944, Megellas and the rest of the 504th landed across the beach at Anzio. Following initial success, Fifth Army’s amphibious assault, Operation Shingle, bogged down in the face of heavy German counterattacks that threatened to drive the Allies into the Tyrrhenian Sea. Anzio turned into a fiasco, one of the bloodiest Allied operations of the war. Not until April were the remnants of the regiment withdrawn and shipped to England to recover, reorganize, refit, and train for their next mission. In September, Megellas parachuted into Holland along with the rest of the 82d Airborne as part of another star-crossed mission, Field Marshal Montgomery’s vainglorious Operation Market Garden. Months of hard combat in Holland were followed by the Battle of the Bulge, and the long hard road across Germany to Berlin. Megellas was the most decorated officer of the 82d Airborne Division and saw more action during the war than most. Yet All the Way to Berlin is more than just Maggie’s World War II memoir. Throughout his narrative, he skillfully interweaves stories of the other paratroopers of H Company, 504th Parachute InfantryRegiment. The result is a remarkable account of men at war. From the Hardcover edition. |

Altamont Commuter Express $54 The Altamont Commuter Express (also known as ACE, pronounced “ace”) is a regional rail service in California connecting Stockton with San Jose. It is named for the Altamont Pass, through which it travels. The service was started on October 19, 1998 with two trains daily in each direction (weekdays only), later increased to three trains in each direction, and as of August 2006 runs four trains daily in each direction, including a “midday” train each direction (until November 2, 2009, when this fourth train will cease operation due to low ridership and poor economic conditions). There are ten stops along its 86 mile (138 km) route, resulting in a total travel time of approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes end-to-end. Despite the fact that the tracks ACE runs on are owned by Union Pacific, ACE rarely experiences long delays as a result. ACE utilizes Bombardier BiLevel Coaches and MPI F40PH-3C locomotives, and is managed by the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission, with operations contracted to Herzog Transit Services. Average weekday ridership is currently 3,700. ACE has explored the possibility of expanding on two lines – a Modesto-Sacramento line, and a Stockton-Pittsburg line. |

Around Sonoita, Arizona (Images of America Series) $14.28 Located at the foot of the majestic Santa Rita Mountains in southeastern Arizona, Sonoita is known for its rolling grasslands, grazing cattle, and working cowboys in well-worn jeans. Ranching blossomed in the early 1880s when the Southern Pacific Railroad linked Benson to Nogales, allowing local cattlemen to ship their livestock to market by train. It would be another 30 years before the first Sonoita Post Office was established, with postmistress Clara Hummel dispensing the mail from her home. The area would remain unincorporated–the closest pioneer neighbors were miles away over dirt roads–but the citizenry grew in friendship and cooperation, developing a community spirit that still exists today. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Sonoita’s neighboring communities of Patagonia, where a historic train depot evokes memories of the town’s role as a distribution center for area mines and ranches, and Elgin, where old-time cattle ranches now share fence lines with the lush vineyards of Winery Row. |

Assignment Algiers $9.43 Princeton grad Erasmus Kloman was undergoing Army training at Fort Bragg in 1943 when, due to his passing knowledge of French, he was interviewed for potential involvement in a highly confidential activity. The interview culminated in the question, Would you be willing to volunteer for hazardous duty behind enemy lines? He signed up for duty with the newly formed Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and after an intensive period of training in various aspects of espionage, found himself on assignment in wartime Cairo, Algiers, and then Caserta. At age 24 with the title of OSS Acting Chief of Operations in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations, he helped organize and coordinate the actions of Operational Groups (OGs), which infiltrated Italy and occupied France on daring sabotage missions. The OG teams were assigned to cut and harass enemy lines of communication, to attack vital enemy installations, to organize and train local resistance elements, and to furnish intelligence to the Allied forces. Kloman’s account of his experience coupled with his extensive research of declassified documents provides an inside view of the shadow war within the larger conflagration of World War II. Colorful imagery and photographs enliven a narrative that will appeal to everyone interested in true spy stories. |

Automatic Train Control $60 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Automatic Train Control (ATC) is a train protection system for railways, ensuring the safe and smooth operation of trains on ATC-enabled lines. Its main advantages include making possible the use of cab signalling instead of track-side signals and the use of smooth deceleration patterns in lieu of the rigid stops encountered with the older ATS technology. ATC can also be used with Automatic Train Operation (ATO). There are several implementations and versions of ATC and each is different. It is especially common in Japan, where ATC is used on all Shinkansen (bullet train) lines. In Japan, ATC has been introduced on various lines as a replacement for ATS. In 1906, the Great Western Railway in the UK developed a system known as “Automatic Train Control”. In accordance with modern terminology, GWR ATC is classified as an Automatic Warning System (AWS). |

Right after leaving the station, the train passes through a tunnel under the Leobersdorfer Bahn, another railway serving St. Pölten. The Alpenbahnhof that comes right after that is the railway’s operational centre. Here are found rolling stock sheds, workshops, and the extensive freight facilities built later. The traveller quickly reaches the biggest station on the line at Ober-Grafendorf. Here is also where the unelectrified branchline begins. The mainline follows the Pielach valley through Hofstetten-Grünau, Rabenstein an der Pielach and the main centre in the valley, Kirchberg an der Pielach, on to the station at Loich, which was once of special importance to freight operations. The tunnel further along was built with only the railway’s own loading gauge in mind, making freight transport by transporter wagons impossible. From here, the valley narrows considerably, and shortly before the next station, Schwarzenbach an der Pielach, the line passes through the Weißenburgtunnel, thereby leaving the Pielach valley and coming out into the Nattersbach valley, which narrows rather like a gorge. So begins Jama’s extraordinary journey of more than a thousand miles north all the way to Egypt, by camel, by truck, by train, but mostly on foot. He slings himself from one perilous city to another, fiercely enjoying life on the road and relying on his vast clan network to shelter him and point the way to his father, who always seems just a day or two out of reach. In his travels, Jama will witness scenes of great humanity and brutality; he will be caught up in the indifferent, grinding machine of war; he will crisscross the Red Sea in search of working papers and a ship. Black Mamba Boy $18.54 Yemen, 1935. Jama is a “market boy,” a half-feral child scavenging with his friends in the dusty streets of a great seaport. For Jama, life is a thrilling carnival, at least when he can fill his belly. When his mother—alternately raging and loving—dies young, she leaves him only an amulet stuffed with one hundred rupees. Jama decides to spend her life’s meager savings on a search for his never-seen father; the rumors that travel along clan lines report that he is a driver for the British somewhere in the north. Bursting with life and a rough joyfulness, Black Mamba Boy is debut novelist Nadifa Mohamed’s vibrant, moving celebration of her family’s own history. |

Chapters: Coney Island – Stillwell Avenue, New Utrecht Avenue/62nd Street, Eighth Avenue, Kings Highway, Fort Hamilton Parkway, Avenue U, 20th Avenue, 18th Avenue, Bay Parkway, Gravesend – 86th Street. Excerpt: Coney Island Stillwell Avenue (New York City Subway) – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1919, a completely reconstructed New West End Terminal was built on an elevated structure to consolidate the terminals of all the former steam railroad lines terminating at Coney Island except the Long Island Rail Road-controlled New York and Manhattan Beach Railway. “West End” was gradually dropped from the terminal’s name, and it is now known as Stillwell Avenue Terminal or Coney Island Terminal. Station signage reads Stillwell Avenue Coney Island. Beginning in late 2001, Coney Island Terminal was entirely reconstructed, and the new terminal opened May 23, 2004 with 6 tracks. The project completed on May 29, 2005, with full restoration of N service and all 8 tracks in service. A new entrance building was constructed, with a terra cotta facade in imitation of the former terminal, including restored BMT signs and logos. The former steel and concrete station, badly corroded by the effects of salt water and poor maintenance, was replaced with a new infrastructure, including a soaring roof with arches reminiscent of classic European train sheds. The roof is glazed with photovoltaic (solar electric) panels, consisting of 2,800 thin-film modules from SCHOTT (Germany) and covering a surface of 76,000 square feet (7,100 m). The solar panel system has a nominal power of about 210 kWp, which generates an annual output of 250,000 kW hours, which the station can use to offset power needs. It is the largest renewable-energy enabled mass transit station in the United… More: |

Boston and Maine in the 20th Century (Images of Rail Series) $12 As the twentieth century dawned, the Boston & Maine Railroad Company controlled virtually all of the rail lines in New Hampshire, as well as much of the service in Maine and Massachusetts. Ultimately, the company operated more than 2,000 stations in northern New England. The train was the most important mode of travel, and the stations were the center of the community. Boston & Maine in the 20th Century continues the first pictorial history of the railroad company, entitled Boston & Maine in the 19th Century. With more than 200 rare images and historical narrative, the book details the trains and their destinations: the terminals, stations, depots, and whistle stops to which they sped. Times changed, and the railroad was passed by; however, its legacy lives on. |

Boston’s Red Line: Bridging the Charles from Alewife to Braintree $21.99 When the Boston Elevated Railway Company broke ground for the Cambridge Subway in May 1909, its intention was to provide the cities of Boston and Cambridge with the finest and most efficient rapid-transit system of the time. Other cities, such as New York and Philadelphia, paid close attention, adopting many of the Cambridge Subway’s revolutionary design features. The subway became known as the Red Line and eventually extended from Cambridge across the Charles River through Boston, serving Dorchester, Braintree, and Mattapan.Boston’s Red Line: Bridging the Charles from Alewife to Braintree details one of Boston’s oldest and busiest subway lines. This nostalgic collection of vintage photographs documents the line’s construction and its engineers and leaders, such as Maj. Gen. William A. Bancroft, mayor of Cambridge and president of the Boston Elevated Railway Company. In these pages, watch as crews break ground in Harvard and Andrew Squares and see the 1929 trolleys that replaced Mattapan’s commuter train service. Through exciting, historic photographs, Boston’s Red Line: Bridging the Charles from Alewife to Braintree tells the fascinating story of how the Crimson City’s subway became the modern Red Line, taking passengers beneath the streets of Boston to landmarks such as Harvard Square, Massachusetts General Hospital, historic Park Street, and the Longfellow Bridge. |

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: horses were in a slow walk. The lines were in Coffey’s hands. The horses were under his control. He could have come to a standstill in a second. Under all these circumstances it would be extremely unreasonable for any one to suppose that he was unaware of the approaching train, and did not intend to stop before reaching the track as he could easily have done, and as is the frequent custom. When the fireman did, nevertheless, begin to entertain a fear that Coffey was inattentive, he at once gave the urgent order to the engineer to stop. It cannot be said either that he did realize the danger sooner, or that, in reason, with his knowledge, he had cause to realize it sooner. Hence the last clear change doctrine never came Into operation.” Such was the situation in this case. The judgment is reversed. SLOANE, J. We concur: OLNEY, J. WILBUR, J. LENNON, J. ANGELLOTTI, C. J. Chosen Soldier: The Making of a Special Forces Warrior $95.99 IN combating terror, America can no longer depend on its conventional military superiority and the use of sophisticated technology. We are fighting guerrilla wars, against insurgents hidden in remote regions, often deep among the local population. In battles such as these, squadrons of billion-dollar bombers and naval fleets mean much less than on-the-ground intelligence and the ability to organize local forces. That’s why, more than ever before, we need men like those of the Army Special Forces—the legendary Green Berets. In Chosen Soldier, Dick Couch—a former Navy SEAL widely admired for his books about SEAL training and operations—offers an unprecedented view of the training of the Army Special Forces warrior. Each year, several thousand enlisted men and several hundred officers volunteer for Special Forces training; less than a quarter of those who apply will complete the course. Chosen Soldier spells out in fascinating detail the arduous regimen these men undergo—the demanding selection process and grueling field exercises, the high-level technical training and intensive language courses, and the simulated battle problems that test everything from how well they gather operational intelligence to their skills at negotiating with volatile, often hostile, local leaders. Green Berets are expected to be deadly in combat, yes, but their responsibilities go far beyond those of other Special Operations fighters; they’re taught to operate in foreign cultures, often behind enemy lines; to recruit, train, and lead local forces; to gather intelligence in hostile territory; to forge bonds across languages and cultures. They must not only be experts in such fields as explosives, communications, engineering, and field medicine, but also be able to teach those skills to others. Each and every Green Beret must function as tactical combat leader, negotiator, teacher, drill sergeant, and diplomat. These tasks require more than just |

Coming to Rest: Poems $1.99 Taking as her touchstone poet Seamus Heaney’s verse “We come back emptied, / to nourish and resist / the words of coming to rest,” Kathryn Stripling Byer in these poems engages the contradictions inherent in the act of coming home. She explores the step-by-step leaving and returning—and finding “home” transformed because of the journey. Seamless lines of poetry weave together experiences as a daughter and a mother, the challenges of aging, the innate dignity of domestic life, and learning to let go while holding fast to what matters all the while. Byer gathers the trivial things that make up our lives and shows their meaningful connections, our movement toward discovery. In Coming to Rest, she expands upon the great themes of the poetic tradition. . . . Just a little while longer, we’ll be on the ground where we’ll hop a train south to the campus, a place I like better than this flimsy carpet of clouds on which I cannot walk to you. I need green fields to do that, some tough city blocks, Kimbark, Ellis, East Hyde Park. Give me boulevard, avenue, chemin, rue, strasse, calle, avenida, el camino, whatever you want to call it, Baby, if it’s down there on earth where you are, it’s Sweet Home. I’ll take it. About the Author:Kathryn Stripling Byer has published four previous books of poetry, including Catching Light, winner of the Southeast Booksellers Association Award for Poetry. Among her other accolades are the Lamont Poetry Selection for Wildwood Flower, the Roanoke-Chowan Poetry Prize and the Brockman-Campbell Award for Black Shawl, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and appointment as Poet Laureate of North Carolina. She lives in Cullowhee, located in the western mountains of the state. |

Amtrak train 94, the Colonial (now part of the Northeast Regional , from Washington, D.C. , to Boston ), crashed into a set of Conrail locomotives running light which had fouled the mainline . Train 94′s speed at the time of the collision was estimated at about 108 miles per hour. Fourteen passengers on the Amtrak train were killed, as well as the Amtrak engineer and lounge car attendant. The Conrail locomotive crew failed to slow down at the signals before Gunpowder, and it was determined that the accident would have been avoided had they done so. Additionally, they tested positive for marijuana . The engineer served four years in a Maryland prison for his role in the crash. In the aftermath, drug and alcohol procedures for train crews were overhauled by the Federal Railroad Administration , which is charged with rail safety. In 1991, prompted in large part by the Chase Maryland crash, the United States Congress took even broader action and authorized mandatory random drug-testing for all employees in “safety-sensitive” jobs in all industries regulated by the Federal Department of Transportation including trucking, bus carriers and rail systems. |

Crossing Enemy Lines One Nation under God $16.5 This book entitled Crossing Enemy Lines One Nation under God is a representation of how America was founded on biblical principles, her roots, her origin etc. Our fore fathers brought laws to our land through the power of united prayer. Our currency has In God We Trust to signify that we do trust God with our currency. America was built on unity through prayer for the great nation it has become The United States of America. What has happened since prayer has been taken out of the school systems? The product of a rebellious nation of unruly children who will commit hideous crimes, juveniles, murders. Several people took prayer out of schools and we let it happen. Our children are our future. We need to train them up in the way they should go. We need to install biblical truths in them, help them to a brighter tomorrow. This is our duties to our children. The second part of this book represents the duties of our service men and women and their fight for freedom, their lives touched by the every day events that has sent them on their tour of duty, away from their families, friends, and significant others (co-workers, neighbors, communities) etc. They are trained and placed in the battlefield to defend our nation. They are warriors in the quest for freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Marching for freedom in the land of the free and home of the brave. So that we continue to be a free nation. When a soldier is called into battle, I wanted to let people know what happens when our president declares war. Prepare to understand how valuable our serviceman and women are. The sacrifices made to keep peace, prosperity, and freedom of liberty flowing in our land. The last chapter of this book is Homecoming Day, it is the saga of the stories that strengthen our nation, bring tears to our eyes, and help us to stay One Nation under God.This book is based on historical fiction and non fiction facts. En 1930 le transport aérien américain était organisé en réseaux croisés de lignes principales, ou Trunk Lines, desservant des aéroports d’ou rayonnaient de nombreux opérateurs locaux, les Feeders. The Dubai Metro carried 10 million passengers from launch on 9 September 2009 to 9 February 2010 with 11 stations operational on the Red Line. |

E3 Series Shinkansen $51 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The E3 series is a Japanese Shinkansen high-speed train type built for Komachi services which commenced on 3 June 1997, coinciding with opening of the new Akita Shinkansen ‘mini-shinkansen’ line, a regular 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow-gauge line between Morioka and Akita upgraded to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) Standard gauge. Later versions of the E3 series were also introduced for use on Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa services. Both ‘mini-shinkansen’ lines join the Tōhoku Shinkansen, providing services south to Tokyo. Like the 400 Series Shinkansen, these trains are built to a smaller loading gauge than mainline Shinkansen trains-the width and length of each car is reduced to fit on the narrower clearances of the ‘mini-shinkansen’. |
