Brick Yard

Boca Raton Brick Paver Walkways – Colors and Patterns Galore!

Where Does Your Garden Path Lead

Walkways and pathways feature both in the front and back yards of many homes. Walkways obviously have a purpose and will lead the walker to someplace; whether for a pleasant meander through the back garden via the patio and swimming pool, or from the driveway to the front door. Brick paver walkways may be built to provide follow through and consistency of design to compliment the home and other outdoor fixed or brick structures, or quite simply because the homeowner feels like installing a garden path during their landscaping exercise. Landscape Art will not lead you up the garden path, but they certainly can guide you in the right direction.

The Three Basic Patterns

The same aspects of quality and elegance cannot be achieved by using asphalt or concrete and there is virtually no limit on the variation of patterns, colors and laying techniques which may be used to create decorative and functional brick paver walkways. There are three basic patterns of brick laying for paths, driveways, patios, pool surrounds etcetera, and from these basic three patterns it is possible to create small works of art. The cleverest, simplest and oldest designs are also often the most elegant. After-all the Romans were laying brick paver pathways the length and breadth of Europe, the Middle East and the British Isles, over 2 000 years ago.

Design and Pattern Alternatives Can Be Dizzying

Although the best brick paver designs are the classic designs there are still books with hundreds of pages filled with designs, you will find historic pattern styles such as those used during the colonial period in the USA; these include running bond, stacked, herringbone, basket weave, whirling, Spanish, diamond, and more. Your landscaper can obviously be of great help when it comes to making choices regarding design and color; don’t for a moment believe that brick pavers only arrive on your doorstep in a “brick” color. Colors and styles range from brick red, to grey, rose and purples and in antique, colonial, European and more styles.

Patterns are not only achieved by the placement of the bricks, they are also achieved by the use of alternative color and style of brick paver. They are chosen not only because they look good, and are functional they are also used to “lead” the visitor or home owner to a focal point in a garden. In the front yard the focal point could be as simple as the front door, in the back yard this could be something more, such as rose garden, swimming pool, patio, place of sanctuary or peace, water feature or even a piece of sculpture.

Various brick paver designs suit varying degrees of traffic, for example a herringbone pattern is ideal for vehicular traffic as loads are more evenly distributed. As far as other than vehicular purposes, virtually any other pattern may be used. The only thing to bear in mind is that the more elaborate the pattern; cuts and labor are more intensive so it will obviously be more expensive, but it will also be much more exclusive. Are you ready to let Landscape Art, lead you up the garden path?

Its location, its construction, its financial management and discipline, have won the admiration of every state in the Union.’ It has proved to the world that criminal punishment can be made a safeguard to society, a protection to the honest industry of the people, and also a benefit to the moral and physical condition of the convicts. The prison limits comprise about one and a half acres of ground, which is enclosed by a wall of hard sand stone, 18 feet high, 3 feet thick at its base, and inclining to i J feet at the top. Within and adjoining this wall, are buildings of the same material, and of brick, used as the warden’s apartment, hospital and chapel, and for workshops and cells. In the yard is a cistern under ground for water, of the capacity of 100 hogsheads, and a fire engine is attached to the premises. A steam engine of forty horse power is connected with the shops for propelling machinery, necessary to carry on the various branches of business. A portion of the cell building is whitewashed with lime each day, which purifies the air, and gives to the lodging apartments an appearance of neatness. Each convict enjoys that blessing of punishment, a separate cell at night, and no one is allowed during the day to look at any visitor, or to catch the eye of his fellow, but all are intent upon the business before them. A library of suitable books, comprising 1500 volumes, is provided for such as can read, and those who can not are instructed by the chaplain, who is assisted in his good work occasionally by the warden and other officers.

 A House on the Heights

A House on the Heights

$8.47

The tranquil life he led in the quiet enclave of Brooklyn Heights stood in sharp contrast to the glittering scene he adored on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge, but for a few years in the 1950′s and ’60′s, Truman Capote happily made his home in a yellow brick house on Willow Street. By turns wistful and farcical, A House on the Heights vividly evokes a neighborhood Capote described as among Brooklyn’s splendid contradictions, a world of grand homes and dimly recalled gentility, of mysterious warehouses and cartoonish street thugs, of antiques and dowagers, a broad yard overhung with wisteria, and the famous Esplanade with its incomparable view–all rendered in Capote’s deft and stylish prose.

Today it is the home of the Bader International Study Centre of Queen’s University, Canada. Herstmonceux Castle Dining HallThe first written evidence of the existence of the Herst settlement appears in William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book which reports that one of William’s closest supporters granted tenancy of the manor at Herst to a man named Wilbert’. By the end of the twelfth century, the family at the manor house at Herst had considerable status. Written accounts mention a lady called Idonea de Herst, who married a Norman nobleman named Ingelram de Monceux. Around this time, the manor began to be called the Herst of the Monceux, a name that eventually became Herstmonceux. A descendant of the Monceux family, Roger Fiennes, was ultimately responsible for the construction of Herstmonceux Castle in the County of Sussex. Sir Roger was appointed Treasurer of the Household of Henry VI of England and needed a house fitting a man of his position, so construction of the castle on the site of the old manor house began in 1441. It was this position as treasurer which enabled him to afford the £3,800 construction of the original castle. The result is not a defensive structure, but a palatial residence in a self-consciously archaising castle style. The profligacy of the 15th Baron Dacre, heir to the Fiennes family, forced him to sell in 1708 to George Naylor, a lawyer of Lincolns Inn in London. Naylors grandson follow… More:

Plot Summary: Jelly Bread and Water Juice is an inspirational tribute to the author’s memory of her grandmother. The main character takes us into an imaginary journey through oceans, skies, jungles, mountains, secret gardens and finally into the loving arms of Grandma. The author recalls her favorite moments from childhood that were spent with her Grandmother, Amy McNeil. The vivid colors, sounds, textures, tastes and smells from grandmother’s home come alive in this imaginary tale. One of the most significant memories of that house was the backyard. This brick “row” style home featured the loveliest backyard with a grape arbor, stone pool and a swing made by the author’s uncle. The yard also featured a lovely garden filled with huge sunflowers and geraniums that “Grandma Amy” so carefully tended to. The garden was where Lora would spend most weekday afternoons playing and talking to the neighbor’s dog…”Queenie”.

 Kitchens, Smokehouses, and Privies

Kitchens, Smokehouses, and Privies

$18.92

In Kitchens, Smokehouses, and Privies, Michael Olmert takes us into the eighteenth-century backyards of colonial America. He explores the many small outbuildings that can still be found at obscure rural farmsteads throughout the Tidewater and greater mid-Atlantic, in towns like Williamsburg and Annapolis, and at elite plantations such as Mount Vernon and Monticello. These structures were designed to support the performance of a single task: cooking food; washing clothes; smoking meat; storing last winter’s ice; or keeping milk, cheese, and cream fresh. Privies and small offices are also addressed, as is the dovecote, in which doves were raised for their eggs, squab meat, feathers, and fertilizer. Often, these little buildings were clustered in such a way as to resemble a small village, knit together by similar design details and building materials: they were all constructed in weatherboards or in brick, for instance, or were arranged in a single file or positioned at the four corners of the yard.In this appealing book, featuring nearly a hundred crisp black-and-white photographs, Olmert explains how these well-made buildings actually functioned. He is riveted by the history of outbuildings: their architecture, patterns of use, folklore, and even their literary presence. In two appendixes he also considers octagonal and hexagonal structures, which had special significance, both doctrinal and cultural, in early America.Archaeologists and historians still have many questions about the design and function of outbuildings-questions that are often difficult to answer because of the ephemeral nature of these structures; they were not documented-any more than laundry rooms and storage units inspire rhapsodies today. Olmert’s book, deeply grounded in scholarship, eminently readable, and profusely illustrated, takes these buildings seriously and gives them the attention they deserve.

Located just east of downtown Louisville, Butchertown is a fascinating mix of architectural styles, businesses, and history. The neighborhood is named for the early Louisville butchers who found the area’s strategic location on Beargrass Creek and its proximity to the Frankfort and Shelbyville turnpikes ideal for their operations. The link to butchers was further solidified when the Bourbon House, later called the Bourbon Stock Yard, was established in 1834, anchoring Butchertown as Louisville’s meatpacking neighborhood. Many points of interest can be found amid the predominantly brick historic homes, including the Last Chance Saloon, the Oertel Brewery, and the Thomas Edison House Museum. Discover Vernon Lanes, one of the four oldest bowling alleys in the country, which has been in operation since 1886 on Story Avenue. Some photographs illustrate the immense damage done by floodwaters in 1937 and 1945. Also pictured are a floodwall built as a result of the 1937 flood and interstate construction during the 1960s, both of which greatly altered the character of the neighborhood.
